Why Your Website Isn't Showing Up on Google (And How to Fix It)

"We have a website, but when I Google us, we're nowhere." We hear this in almost every audit call. The good news: the cause is usually one of six things, and you can diagnose most of them in ten minutes.

Work through these in order.

1. Google hasn't indexed your site at all

Before you can rank, you have to be in the index. Check in two seconds: search Google for site:yourwebsite.com. If nothing comes back, Google doesn't have your site.

Fix it: Set up Google Search Console (it's free), verify your site, and submit your sitemap. If your site is new, indexing can take days to a few weeks. Search Console will also tell you why pages aren't indexed — which turns guessing into a to-do list.

2. You're searching for the wrong thing

If you search your exact business name and don't appear, that's a real problem. But most owners search a generic term — "marketing agency" — check the first page, and conclude they're invisible.

Generic single keywords are national battles. Your fight is local and specific: "marketing agency Pembroke Pines," "dentist near me," "cuban bakery Doral." Check where you stand on those. (Also: Google personalizes results — use an incognito window for a cleaner read.)

3. Your site says nothing Google can rank

This is the most common real cause. The homepage says "Welcome" and "Quality you can trust," but never plainly states what you do and where you do it. Google ranks pages for topics; a page with no clear topic ranks for nothing.

Fix it: Every important page needs, in real sentences: what the service is, where you offer it, and answers to what customers actually ask. One page per major service beats one page listing everything. Our local SEO guide walks through this structure.

4. Technical problems are blocking you

Less common, more invisible. The usual suspects:

  • A noindex tag left over from the site's development ("we told Google to ignore us and forgot")
  • The site was rebuilt and old URLs now 404
  • The site takes eight seconds to load on a phone
  • No HTTPS

Search Console surfaces most of these under Pages and Core Web Vitals. A technical SEO audit catches the rest — this is exactly the kind of thing that's cheap to find and expensive to leave alone.

5. You have no presence beyond the website

Google decides trust partly by corroboration. A site with zero reviews, no Google Business Profile, no consistent listings, and no other sites mentioning it is a stranger asking for a loan with no credit history.

Fix it: Claim and complete your Google Business Profile (it can outrank your website for local searches — and that's fine, it's still you). Get listed consistently in the directories that matter for your industry. Build a steady review stream — here's the system we recommend.

6. Your competitors are simply doing more

Sometimes nothing is broken. The competitors above you have more content, more reviews, more links, and a two-year head start. That's not a bug to fix; it's a race to run.

The realistic response is consistent effort over months: publishing pages that answer real questions, accumulating reviews, and keeping your profile active. SEO compounds — which is precisely why it's hard to catch a competitor who started earlier, and why the best time to start is now.

The 10-minute diagnosis, in order

  1. site:yourwebsite.com — indexed at all?
  2. Search your business name — do you own your own name?
  3. Search "your service + your city" in incognito — where are you really?
  4. Open Search Console — any errors under Pages?
  5. Read your homepage cold — does it say what you do and where?

If you get through that list and the answer is "some of this is broken and I don't know how to fix it," that's what we're for. A one-time SEO audit gives you the full picture and a prioritized fix list — no retainer required.
